Love this list, and never seen that Tom Waits version before. Reminds me that I’ve loved that song (& album) for 30+ years but I always mishear the line as ‘Got a telephone call from Miss Tambo’. A ludicrous mistake as it’s only the title of the bloody song!
That said, in my (partial) defence, getting a call from someone with that name sounds exactly like something that would happen to Waits.
I listened to it now, great ambiance. Thanks for sharing that:) there is a lot of turkish songs with Istanbul title. I've shared the ones i like the most. There is also Istanbul Calling series which are magnificent ethnic & electronic albums, give them a try if you enjoying listening to. 🙏
There’s “Istanbul” by Orquesta Copa Salvo, a somewhat underground and underrated Japanese multi-genre band (albeit more of the Latin variety than any other). It’s a fiery blend of charanga and mambo from their 2010 album and remained largely unknown except by hardcore salsa DJs :) because it was only on CD format (domestically) and only recently seems to have hit the web.
Love this idea of city as a musical muse. So true and significant in its own way.

Thanks again for the article x
There’s also Istanbul by Ben Harper. It’s an instrumental, and I love how good it sounds. 🎶
